The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
