“It was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
